Many people invest significant amounts of money into their area rugs. Area rugs are also mobile, so they may stay with you even longer than your home. If you do tire of them, it would still be great if you could pass them to another family member or possibly even sell them. Here are some tips and tricks to cleaning and maintaining your area rugs so they will last for generations.
Daily Care
Hair Dryer
Usually all an area rug needs on a regular basis is a good vacuuming. Invest in a high quality vacuum to ensure you get to the dirt that is buried deep down into the pile. When vacuuming area rugs you should always vacuum in the direction of the pile. If your area rug has a fringed border, be careful not to run over it with your vacuum cleaner as you can damage it or weaken thematerial. Instead, sweep the edges of the area rug and the fringe with a broom. You may choose to sprinkle a carpet freshener before vacuuming or even spray the area rug down with a liquid fabric freshener.
Annual-Biannual Care
Once or twice a year you will want to flip your rugs over and clean the underside. Be sure to use a vacuum with a beater bar so that any dirt that has gotten trapped will fall out of the pile. Vacuum or sweep as usual when you flip the rug back over.
Only as Necessary
If your area rug becomes significantly soiled, you may need to wash it. If it is very expensive or anti aging. Typically it only requires you to sprinkle the product on the area rug, work it in with a broom or similar object and wait for a time period before vacuuming. There are also dry products available for emergency spot cleaning.
Area rugs need proper care and maintenance to weather the effects of time. Time spent caring for your rug will pay rich dividends in the years to come.
